Located in the Ashburton Business Estate, which can be found north of Ashburton and adjacent to State Highway 1, Fairfield Freight Hub has been established with the objective of ensuring the enduring viability of the Canterbury supply chain. This intermodal project is part of a long-term agreement with KiwiRail for the development and operation of a rail siding, combined with container transfer services, warehouse storage and grain handling facilities.
Together with providing associated fumigation and devanning services, this MPI Approved Transitional Facility aims to provide economic and operational efficiency benefits, while also reducing heavy vehicle movements throughout the Canterbury region, resulting in reduced infrastructure deterioration and carbon emissions.
With the existing Ashburton rail siding site having reached capacity, it is vital to the Canterbury economy that a more structured approach to freight movements be established. From a need to address these critical issues, Fairfield Freight Hub was developed.
Wholly owned by the Wareing Group Limited, a substantial Mid Canterbury based enterprise incorporating a number of transport companies located throughout the South Island, Fairfield Freight Hub provides a staging model aimed at smoothing volumes for both empty container supply, export cargo ready to ship and import handling.
